Snook Fishing in Punta Gorda

Snook are a tropical species that reaches the northern edge of their range in the waters around Punta Gorda. They are ambush predators, lying in wait beneath mangrove overhangs, dock shadows, and bridge pilings for passing baitfish or crabs. Their distinctive black lateral line and sloping forehead make them easily identifiable, and their habit of crashing surface lures and flies with violent strikes makes them unforgettable to catch.

The snook season in Florida runs from March through November, with the best fishing typically occurring in late spring and summer when water temperatures are warm and baitfish are abundant. Snook are extremely sensitive to cold water—winter cold fronts can push them out of the backcountry and into deeper channels and passes. During these periods, focus your efforts around the Charlotte Harbor mouth and the Peace River mouth where warmer water often discharges.

Fly fishing for snook requires a heavier rod than most inshore species. An 8 or 9 weight is ideal for handling larger fish, and a fast-sinking line helps get your fly down to where snook are holding. Baitfish patterns, especially those that imitate threadfin herring and mullet, produce well, as do shrimp patterns during colder months when snook feed more heavily on crustaceans.
