Jack Crevalle Fishing in Punta Gorda

Jack crevalle are one of the most underappreciated gamefish on the Gulf Coast. They grow large—often exceeding 30 pounds—fight incredibly hard, and will hit a fly with the enthusiasm of a fish half their size. They're also incredibly abundant, meaning you can often find action when other species are slow.

What makes jack crevalle so much fun on a fly rod is their aggressive feeding behavior. When a school of jacks is actively feeding, they'll crash through baitfish schools at the surface, creating a chaotic feeding frenzy. Casting into these explosions and stripping a fly fast through the melee often results in immediate, violent strikes. Even when they're not actively feeding on the surface, jacks are still aggressive and will readily attack a fly worked with purpose.

Jack crevalle travel in schools, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, and can be found throughout the Charlotte Harbor system. They prefer deeper water during the hottest summer months and move shallower during winter. Look for them around passes, channel edges, and anywhere baitfish are concentrated. A fast retrieve is essential when fishing for jacks—the faster you strip, the more aggressive the strike.
